Lawmakers Reintroduce the Medicare for All Bill
Several progressive lawmakers have revived the debate in Congress. The proposal supports a single-payer healthcare plan that would replace many private insurance systems.
Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, along with Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington and Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan, reintroduced the Medicare for All bill. The legislation gained support from 14 Senate Democrats and more than 100 House Democrats.
What the Medicare for All Plan Would Cover
The legislation proposes a four-year rollout. During that time, coverage would gradually expand to all Americans.
Under the universal healthcare bill, patients would not pay premiums, deductibles, or copayments. The plan would also cover many services, including:

Mental health services
Prescription medications
Supporters believe the Medicare for All bill could reduce long-term healthcare costs. They also argue that it could make healthcare more accessible.
Supporters Say It Could Expand Access to Care
Sen. Sanders stated that the COVID-19 pandemic showed how important affordable healthcare is for everyone.
“Millions of people want to see a doctor but cannot afford it,” Sanders said.
“That should not happen in a country as wealthy as the United States.”
Supporters of the Medicare for All policy point to projections from the Congressional Budget Office. Those estimates suggest the healthcare system could save around $650 billion each year.
Rep. Jayapal also emphasized the financial struggles many Americans face when paying for healthcare.
Critics Raise Concerns About the Plan
The Medicare for All bill has also faced strong opposition from parts of the healthcare industry.
Some critics worry that a government-run healthcare system could disrupt the current insurance market. Others believe it could increase wait times or reduce healthcare choices.
The Partnership for America’s Health Care Future also expressed concerns.
“Every American deserves affordable and high-quality healthcare,” said Executive Director Lauren Crawford Shaver.
